Hurricanes Clinic - 01/14/06
The clinic was great! We had
some of our players down there and I can’t stress
enough how important and valuable these events are. Even an
accomplished player can still work on the fundamentals of the game.
Break-out and simple snap-shooting techniques can make or break games. They
emphasized the necessity to continue the drills being taught and also
explained in detail as to why this is important.
So many teams claim to do drills, but many don’t
really. They snap-shoot a few times and then scrimmage. Sometimes the focus
on the basics is lost somewhere along the way. It was good to see that this
focus wasn’t lost here. Hopefully, the participants of the clinic will take
what they have learned and incorporate it into their techniques. I know my
players will.
From an organizational perspective, the clinic was very
well run! The Hurricane players were professional and were able to cater to
experienced players as well as those with little experience. Not an easy
task, but it was one that was handled with ease. I would recommend it even
for experience players as it could serve to fill in some gaps in their own
style, making for a more complete player.
As a coach, I have to choose carefully as to where and
how the team receives outside instructions. As a parent of a player, I
reserve the right to scrutinize anybody teaching my child regardless of
status. From both perspectives, I am pleased to say that the Hurricanes have
certainly earned our respect!
