Hurricanes Clinic - 01/14/06
Planet Paintball
The clinic was great! We had
some of our players down there and I can’t stress
enough how important and valuable these events are. Even an
accomplished player can still work on the fundamentals of the game.
Break-out and simple snap-shooting techniques can make or break games. They
emphasized the necessity to continue the drills being taught and also
explained in detail as to why this is important. So many teams claim to do drills, but many don’t
really. They snap-shoot a few times and then scrimmage. Sometimes the focus
on the basics is lost somewhere along the way. It was good to see that this
focus wasn’t lost here. Hopefully, the participants of the clinic will take
what they have learned and incorporate it into their techniques. I know my
players will.
From an organizational perspective, the clinic was very
well run! The Hurricane players were professional and were able to cater to
experienced players as well as those with little experience. Not an easy
task, but it was one that was handled with ease. I would recommend it even
for experience players as it could serve to fill in some gaps in their own
style, making for a more complete player.
As a coach, I have to choose carefully as to where and
how the team receives outside instructions. As a parent of a player, I
reserve the right to scrutinize anybody teaching my child regardless of
status. From both perspectives, I am pleased to say that the Hurricanes have
certainly earned our respect!

Hurricanes Clinic - 06/29 - 06/30 Maynard Paintball Club It turned out to be two great days of paintball instruction with the Hurricanes! The forecast called for rain, but it held off until the very last part of the first day. The second day was absolutely perfect! Focus on the first day centered around the fundamentals. The Hurricanes did stress the extreme importance in practicing snap shooting, running and gunning, bunker control. There were drills that covered how to play certain bunkers like the snake, the tapeline, and all the other various positions on the field. Emphasis was also placed on how to walk the field. Something which many players overlook, or simply don’t know how to do. As simple as it seems, walking the field is actually a very complex activity. Many teams just focus on the break-out and shooting the starting lanes. That’s OK, but you have to take it many steps further into the game. Moving up and closing the game also factors into the field walking and I was glad to see that the Hurricanes had this covered as well. You have to take into consideration what happens if one of your players gets shot out – then what? How do you continue your move up the field and close the game? A lot of consideration in the clinic was put towards the fact that you have to think the game out well past the break-out. The second day involved a lot of scrimmaging drills and 5-on-5’s. They incorporated components learned the first day, which is why it is crucial to go both days. Going one day is good, but to get the entire picture and reap the full benefits, you must go both days. As clinics go, this one was absolutely worth the money and I would recommend it to players of every level. I have explained it to my guys many times and I’ll say it again: there’s always something to learn. You’re either learning new skills, or honing your existing ones. Any chance to work with a pro team should be taken advantage of.
Many thanks to Dave Adams and the Hurricanes, Anthony and Lori from the NEPL, and the folks at Maynard Paintball!!
